Hartington Circular Walk ft. Pilsbury Castle - Peak District

With the amazing weather we've had (jixed it now, it's been raining since!) we really wanted to get outdoors and go for a great walk along in the Peak District. We probably should have checked the weather before we set off as there was a rather nasty grey cloud following us around all day.

Our start point was a conveniently located pay and display. It was about £4 for 4 ish hours. We started this walk by taking a wrong turn (a detour as Mr W says), but as it was through a beautiful village, we couldn't really complain. The right way took us up a long road that was leading up to many farm lands. The footpath was clearly signposted and we crossed the over to the field. This was a little muddy, so was pleased we wore our walking boots.

We climbed over many fields all of which either had lambs, cows or great views! There was a fair bit of a climb, but with greenery all around you, the views were really great. As soon as we got to the peak, we turned left and made our way back down.

We noticed that Pilsbury Castle was near by, we took a (planned) detour and went to see the ruin here. The path leading up to the castle was a little steep, which was quite funny when trying to come back down.

We opted to go through some more fields which ended up being a bit shorter than the other route where you followed the river. After watching the lambs play and the ewes nurse, we were greeted in this field by many cows. They all covered the path so did need to walk around them - they didn't move, just stared at us which is a little nerve wracking!

We came through to the start of the village and stopped off at the local pub. They said walkers were welcome, but didn't allow muddy boots - so make sure you stamp it off before you get there. We didn't opt for food as it was a bit expensive after a pricey weekend that we've had but the menu did look good. This walk wasn't difficult, but it could be quite long and slippery, especially in the wet. We would say walking boots are a must, but some family was visiting and they managed it in their trainers.
